The 3-3-3 rule explains what you need to know about the adjustment period for your newest member of the family.
The first three days: Your new canine companion needs some time to decompress. They probably feel unsure of what’s expected of them and are stressed. Give them space, reassurance and patience.
The first three weeks: During this time, your new addition starts to feel relaxed and their true personality emerges. Now is when you can start engaging with them more.
The first three months: This is the period when your adopted dog’s true personality and temperament are displayed. It’s a great time to bond with them as they learn to relax and feel at home with you.
Enjoy your new rescue dog, they will be your best friend! The first thing most people want to do is show off their new pup. Just take it slow, I know you are excited but keep in mind how your dog is feeling. They have been through a lot; they may have lost their family, been abandoned in a shelter… it’s all very stressful. They need time, so give it to them.
Remember the 3-3-3 dog rule is a general guideline. Your dog will go at their own pace during the honeymoon period, it could take 4, 5 or maybe even 6 months. Each dog is unique. Just be there for them, comfort them when they need it and create a positive safe environment and you will be on your way to becoming the best of friends!
